I truly believe that certain people are more “open” to paranormal experiences than others. I also believe that I am one of those people, along with my mother, my brother, my middle son and my twin girls.

Most of the encounters I’ve experienced have been very benign and for the most part very pleasant and heat warming; messages from loved ones via dreams or even just a good vibe from people and places. On the odd occasion, the encounters are quite different and bone chilling; seeing shadows of people in my room, bad vibes from people or places or on one occasion where my name was spoken to me, clearly, when I was alone at home. But that’s not the experience that frightened me the most. This happened about seven years ago, shortly after we moved into the house we currently reside in.

One evening, after settling down in bed, I entered that state where you are asleep, but you know you are asleep and you are still slightly aware of outside noises and presences which I’ve found that that is generally when most of my encounters have happened. Suddenly, I had the feeling that someone, other than my husband, was in the room with me. Glancing down at the foot of the bed I saw an apparition of a child, a blond, curly headed girl to be precise, wearing a white cotton nightgown that was reminiscent of another era. She never spoke but I just knew and felt that she was alone and afraid. Moving to the side of my bed, she looked at me and again, I knew she was scared and she was seeking maternal comfort. That’s when I fully woke up and she was gone.

Normally that’s where it ends, I see someone once and never again, except for my grandmother but that’s another story. The next night, and every other night in that week, the same thing happened. The girl appeared every night and every night I could feel her getting closer to the bed, the air was cooler and strangely thicker every night until that night. On that night, everything started the same; she appeared and moved to the side of the bed, seeking comfort from her mother. I felt the side of the bed dip slightly as I grew colder and colder and the air grew thicker and thicker, suddenly it felt as if there was a weight on my chest holding me down, keeping me from waking myself up as I had the nights before. An undeniable sense of panic washed over me as the oxygen in my lungs began to run out. I couldn’t exhale, I couldn’t take a breath and I knew that I was suffocating. I didn’t know what to do and the only thing I could think of was that I was never going to see my children again. To be honest, I think it was the thoughts of my children and how destroyed they would be without a mother that gave me the strength to get free. I sat bolt upright in the bed, trembling and literally gasping for air. It took awhile, but when I was able to calm myself down, I swung my legs over the side of the bed, faced the spot where she regularly stood and told her, out loud, that I was not her mother, that I had children of my own that needed me and that she had to go. I didn’t sleep that night, or the night after that, but that was the last I saw of her.

Now, as terrifying as that was for me, I do hope that she found her mother and my feelings tell me that she did, she just needed a little guidance.

My name is Patricia Leever and I encounter the paranormal.

I also write about a 135 yr old demon hunter in Los Angeles in Urban Paranormal Romance novel, Divinity --

Title: Divinity

Synopsis: Demons.

They’re everywhere, hiding in plain sight. Chances are, you’ve interacted with one or two of them in your lifetime without even realizing it...

Demon hunter Evelyn Brighton saves unsuspecting humans from the malevolent creatures masquerading around them every day. Working under the Lebriga Corporation’s direction, she never fails to bring her A-game with her keen skill, fiercely independent spirit, and the best weapon in her arsenal: the Divinity blade.

Evelyn’s world is turned on its ear, however, when she is ordered to train cocky new recruit Daniel Summers. They both feel an instinctive pull drawing them to one another, the ancient spells tattooed into their skin illuminating whenever the two hunters come into contact. But with evil looming over the city of Los Angeles, Evelyn and Daniel’s mutual competitiveness and sense of duty to Lebriga and all humankind forces them to hold back their desires. Will their restraint be enough to keep them focused and save southern California, or will the dark forces prevail?

Set in modern-day Los Angeles, Divinity is an action-filled, fast-paced marriage of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Edgy, witty, and sexy, it will bind you in its spell.

  1. Although I've never experienced a phenomena but I do always love reading the stories. As a child I devoured them.

  2. Patricia's accounting of the little ghost girl gave me absolute goose bumps!

And yeah, the state she described prior to sleep is called 'hypnagogic'. Upon awakening it is called 'hypnopompic'. I know because my entire life I've been extremely slow to fall asleep, and thus have experienced a slew of hypnogogic weirdness lol

  4. I agree that some people are just more open-minded when it comes to the paranormal. I read too much, so I'd probably be one of those people lol. I love the girl's tattoos! I bet that would hurt though. Thanks for the post and giveaway!

  6. Oooh interesting! I've always felt more open to paranormal occurrences as well. I have never had one myself and I can be skeptical sometimes about other people's encounters which is why I never watch things like Ghost Hunters. But I do believe that there are other entities out there and all. Just never experienced anything myself.

  9. I totally agree. My mom still swears to this day that the house we lived in when I was little was haunted. There where lots of unexplainable occurences that happened there so who knows!

    Thanks so much!

  12. I can't imagine how terrified you must have felt! I've had dreams were I couldn't move and I couldn't wake myself up and that was awful, but at least there wasn't someone there preventing it! I admire you for standing up and telling her to go - I'm afraid I probably would have screamed until my husband woke up and then I would have been terrified to go to sleep in that room ever again! I think your outcome was a much better one:) Thanks so much for sharing with us, both your story and your book!

  14. I've always kinda felt (or maybe wished) that I was more "open" than others too. I've had a few unexplainable things happen - but nothing like that!

  15. I know I am definitely not open to paranormal, and I'm o.k. with it.
